Metal Backsplash Behind the Stove: Where the Field Starts and Stops

The tiles are out of the box, the wall is clean, and nothing on the packaging tells you the one thing you have to decide: where the metal stops. A metal backsplash behind the stove is the most looked-at rectangle in the room, and what makes it read as designed is rarely the finish. It is the edges. A metal backsplash behind the stove is a rectangle before it is a finish Before you think about copper or silver, look at the wall as geometry. A range wall already has lines drawn on it by other people: the countertop below, the cabinets above, the hood between them, and the returns where the cabinet runs end. Walls that look resolved start and stop on one of those lines. The ones that look unfinished have an edge floating mid-wall, at a measurement someone picked because it seemed about right. The lines your kitchen has already drawn Three measurements govern the range wall, and only one is genuinely fixed. The counter. A base cabinet box is commonly built at 34 1/2 inches, and a 1 1/2 inch countertop brings it to 36 inches off the floor. Cabinet makers call this an industry convention, not a code requirement. The upper cabinets. Wall cabinets are typically hung with their bottoms 54 inches off the floor, leaving 18 inches of open wall above a 36-inch counter. That figure is arithmetic between two conventions rather than a rule, and real kitchens drift from it constantly. The NKBA's Kitchen Planning Guidelines (pre-2023 edition) recommend at least 15 inches above a work counter, a different number again. Measure your wall rather than trusting either. The hood. There is no convention here at all. Mounting heights come from the hood's own manual, and manufacturers do not agree with themselves. One major hood maker publishes three different minimum pairs across three of its own models: 18 inches above an electric cooking surface and 26 above gas, then 26 and 28, then 24 and 30. Maximums cluster near 30. The figure that governs your kitchen is printed in your manual, and stricter local regulations override it. Eight-inch tiles make the field land on fractions A modular tile behaves differently from a single sheet. WallWear's tiles are 8 by 8 inches, sold in packs of ten with a published coverage of approximately 4.44 square feet, and they butt together with no grout line to absorb a discrepancy. An 8-inch grid meets a kitchen built to different numbers: An 18-inch gap between counter and cabinets is 2.25 courses. Two whole courses give you 16 inches and leave a 2-inch strip. A nominal 30-inch range is 3.75 tiles wide. A 36-inch hood is 4.5. Vertically, a 16-inch gap is the only common dimension that lands whole, and it is far rarer than 18. Widths are kinder: a 24 or 48 inch appliance is exactly three or six courses. Little lands on a whole tile, which is what happens whenever a module meets a room. So decide where the part-tile goes rather than discovering it at the top of the wall. Horizontally, center the run and let the cuts fall at the ends, the way our install guide describes. Vertically, keep whole tiles where the eye lands and push the cut course to where something already breaks the line: tight under the cabinets a partial course sits in shadow, and at the counter the countertop's back edge interrupts it. At eye level, a 2-inch sliver is the first thing anyone sees. Measure the actual appliance rather than its name, and dry-lay a column with the backing on. Size the field to the hood, not the range No published standard covers this one, so take what follows as our reasoning and not as a rule. The range and the hood above it are frequently two different widths. Manufacturers split on the advice: some say a hood need only match the cooking surface, others recommend roughly three inches of overhang on each side. Follow the second and a 30-inch range ends up under a 36-inch hood. When those widths differ, a defined panel of metal has to choose one, and the hood should win: it sits higher, it is larger, and the eye reads it as the center of the composition. A panel cut to the range width beneath a wider hood looks pinched, because the metal's vertical edges float inside the hood's outline with painted wall showing between them. A polished finish such as Silver Fleur makes those edges more visible still. Full height, or stop at the cabinet line? "Full height" means two things depending on who says it: counter to the underside of the uppers, or counter to ceiling. Decide which before you buy, because the quantities differ sharply. There are two coherent answers. The first is a single continuous band at cabinet height, running the full width of the wall and passing behind the hood unchanged, leaving the bay above it painted. That reads calm, and suits a kitchen where the cabinetry leads. The second carries the field up the bay to the underside of the hood, so the hood is set into metal rather than sitting above it. This is the more architectural move, and where a finish with real depth earns its keep. The incoherent answer is stopping partway up at no particular line, which usually happens when someone runs out of tiles. Where the run ends sideways When the counter runs longer than the uppers. Past the last cabinet, the field's top edge loses the line defining it. Two options work: carry the band on at the same height and stop at the end of the counter, or step down to a short splash. What fails is letting the field die in open wall. Around a window. Run the metal to the casing and let the casing terminate it. Trim is a strong line, so if the layout leaves a part-tile there, keep it: a cut edge tight to a casing reads as fitted. With open shelving. The whole field is visible top to bottom, with no cabinet shadow to hide a partial course. Put your whole tiles at the top and push any cut down to the counter. A high-contrast pattern such as Teal and Silver Leaves holds that surface on its own, because the eye takes in the whole field at once. At an outside corner. Either wrap it or stop cleanly on it. Stopping an inch short is the most reliable way to make a finished wall look unfinished. A finish, not a heat shield One boundary outranks every composition question. The tiles are water-resistant aluminum and they wipe down well after a cook, but on your wall they are a finish. They do not change the clearances your appliances require, and they do not turn a combustible wall into a protected one. The model residential code sets a minimum vertical clearance above a cooking top to unprotected combustible material, and the reductions it allows are narrow: the listing and labeling of the range hood or an oven with integral exhaust, or a specified layer of insulating board and sheet metal on the underside of whatever sits above the cooking top. That is construction, not a decorative skin on the wall behind, so metal tile does not buy you an inch. Whatever your range and hood manuals specify governs your kitchen. One appliance maker requires zero side clearance to the wall above counter height for an electric range, then recommends up to six inches anyway to avoid heat damage to surrounding surfaces: a manufacturer protecting the finish rather than preventing a fire. Frequently Asked Questions How high should a metal backsplash go behind a stove? There is no universal number, because the hood sets it. In the manuals behind those figures, minimums span roughly 18 to 26 inches over an electric cooking surface and 26 to 30 over gas, and 30 shows up as a recommended maximum rather than a floor. Measure from your counter to your hood's mounting height, then decide where to stop. Where do you stop a kitchen backsplash? On a line the room already has: an inside or outside corner, a window casing, the end of a counter run, or the vertical edge of a cabinet. Avoid ending a run mid-wall or just short of a corner. And planning the layout before the countertops go in, which moves your bottom line and shifts every course. Is a 4-inch backsplash outdated? It is inherited rather than designed. The short splash became common because fabricators could cut it from countertop offcuts, so it exists for material reasons, not compositional ones. Corrugated Metal Backsplash: What the Farmhouse Photo Leaves Out

The corrugated metal backsplash you saved to a mood board was almost certainly photographed the week it went in. Roofing panel looks wonderful on day one. The ribs catch light, the galvanized surface reads as warm and worked-in, and nothing has yet met a skillet of bacon. The material is genuinely excellent at the job it was designed for, which is standing on a barn roof in the rain. What a corrugated metal backsplash actually is It is exterior building product, brought indoors. The profile most commonly stocked is 2.5 in corrugation: sheets roughly 26 in wide giving about 24 in of wall coverage, with ribs around half an inch tall on 2.67 in centers, in six to twelve foot lengths. Gauge is usually 26 or 29, and the difference matters more than the number suggests. The 29 gauge sheet is thinner, cheaper and noticeably floppier; 26 gauge feels like a panel rather than a sheet. Over that steel sits a zinc coating. Galvanizing is a corrosion system, applied so steel can survive weather. What makes it excellent outdoors is worth understanding before it goes above a counter, because a kitchen attacks surfaces in a completely different way than the sky does. Cut edges are the part nobody photographs Panel manufacturers are blunt about this in their own installation manuals: edges can be sharp enough to cause severe cuts, and installers are told to wear heavy gloves and eye protection. On a roof those edges end up overhead, out of reach. On a backsplash, every trim you make to meet a countertop, a window casing or a run of cabinets leaves a fresh raw edge at the exact height where people reach for the salt. There is a proper answer, and it is trim. Corrugated systems ship a whole family of it: J-trim, edge cap, wainscot and corner profiles, all made to cover raw edging rather than leave it exposed. What no manufacturer publishes is a detail for terminating panel at a countertop, around an outlet, or against a cabinet edge. Those are wall trims adapted to a kitchen, so the finish quality rests on your patience rather than on a documented method. A galvanized metal backsplash is built for weather, not for degreaser This is where the material and the room genuinely disagree. Zinc holds up in a fairly narrow chemical band, performing well roughly above pH 4 and below pH 12.5, with more conservative guidance putting the comfortable range at 5 to 12. A kitchen cabinet full of cleaning products lives at both ends of that. The galvanizing industry's own compatibility guidance is specific. Bleach is corrosive to galvanized steel even diluted, and chlorine based sprays can dull the surface. Acidic foods, tomato and fruit juices among them, attack the coating aggressively. The recommended cleaning protocol is soft: nylon bristle brushes, gentle pressure. Two things deserve saying in the material's favor. Small scratches largely look after themselves, because surrounding zinc protects exposed steel sacrificially across a narrow gap, so a trimmed edge is not an instant rust site. Indoor air is also the mildest corrosion environment there is, far gentler than a coastal roof. The realistic risk is not dramatic failure. It is a finish that slowly stops looking the way it did in the photograph, on a wall you look at every day. Ridges hold what a flat wall sheds Grout lines are the fair comparison. Anyone who has scrubbed a tiled splashback knows the tile face wipes in seconds and the recessed joints take the actual work. A corrugated profile is that problem repeated every 2.67 in across the whole wall, and half an inch deep. Grease does not sit politely on the high points; it collects in the valleys, where a cloth passes straight over the top and reaches nothing. There is a second issue behind the panel rather than on it. A wavy sheet against a flat wall leaves a continuous void, and any splash that gets past an unsealed edge sits somewhere that does not dry quickly. How corrugated panel actually attaches The geometry decides this, and it rules out the easy version. Because the sheet is wavy and a wall is flat, only the high points make contact, so there is very little for adhesive to hold. No manufacturer instruction describes gluing panel to drywall and stopping there. What they specify is screws: into a wood substrate of adequate thickness, or into furring strips fixed to the studs, typically every twelve to sixteen inches. The fasteners carry EPDM sealing washers, stay visible on the finished face, and dimple the panel permanently if over-driven. So the realistic build is furring or a plywood backer, a grid of exposed screw heads, and trim at every termination. Outlets add their own puzzle. A cover plate spans only the ribs, so the device sits proud of or behind the finished face, and electrical rules require the box to be brought forward to that surface, normally with a listed box extender. That is a conversation for an electrician rather than something to solve with a longer screw. Cutting has real constraints too. Snips, an electric nibbler or shears are what the manuals name. Abrasive cutting with a grinder or cut-off wheel is specifically ruled out, because the heat damages the coating and promotes rusting at the point you have just exposed. Hot filings are their own hazard: they embed in the finish and rust as orange specks, and more than one manufacturer treats uncleaned filings as grounds for voiding the warranty. Where corrugated metal genuinely belongs None of this makes it a bad material, and treating it as one would be unfair. Corrugated panel is terrific on an island back, a bar front, a mudroom wall or a covered porch: places that want the barn reference and are not sprayed with hot fat and citrus every evening. In a farmhouse kitchen it often does more good a step away from the counter than directly behind it. That look does not require a corrugated profile, and it survives a kitchen far better without one. Framed Tin Ceiling Tiles: Metal as Wall Art

A pressed metal tile already looks like art before you have done anything to it. The pattern is stamped into the surface rather than printed onto it, so it shifts as you walk past and as the light moves. That's why framed tin ceiling tiles so often disappoint: most advice treats the tile as a flat print, and flat-print framing destroys the quality you wanted. Framed tin ceiling tiles: two different projects, one phrase Search for tin ceiling tile frames and two unrelated things come back: a tile set inside a frame and hung as art, or a frame made from a tile, with the middle cut away so a mirror shows through. Depth is the decision everything else follows from The recess inside a moulding is the rabbet, and rabbet depth is the distance from the front lip to the back of it. Everything has to fit inside: the object, any spacer, the glazing, the backing board. Frames built for photographs run under an inch deep and assume something flat. If the recess is shallower than the tile plus its backing, the tile either stands proud of the moulding or sits hard against the glass. So measure at the tile's highest raised point, add your backing board, allow a little clearance, and shop for a rabbet deeper than that total. Purpose-built shadow boxes commonly run from roughly half an inch to about two inches, with deeper boxes available. The shallow end of that range is no better than a photo frame, so read the stated depth rather than trusting the label. When a moulding you love is too shallow, framers stack a second profile behind it. Three formats behave differently: Shadow box. Deep recess, object enclosed behind glazing with an air gap. The most protective, and the most likely to fight you over reflections. Float frame. The tile is raised on a hidden mount so a visible gap surrounds it and it reads as suspended. Float framing can be left open or closed with glazing held off on spacers; leaving it open is what keeps the relief legible. Open-face. No glazing, the tile seated directly in the rabbet. You can build it in an afternoon, and it reads almost the way the material does on a wall. The National Park Service, writing about historic pressed metal, says the depth of the pressing can be as character-defining as the pattern itself. An intricate design such as Silver Fleur reads best when nothing is pressing on it, which is one more reason to measure before committing to a moulding. Whether to put glass over it at all It is worth asking, because for metal the answer is clear. Framers hold that when an object is robust enough to cope with dust and light on its own, naming metal, stone and tile specifically, you can frame it unglazed. Leave the glass off and there is nothing left to reflect. If you would rather enclose it, two rules carry the weight. A spacer must hold the glazing clear of the surface, since glazing resting on an object invites moisture and adhesion. And skip non-glare glass: its etched surface diffuses light, and sharpness drops the further it sits from the artwork. Anti-reflective museum glazing stays clear across an air gap. Mounting it flat, and hanging it safely Keeping the panel flat Metal telegraphs whatever sits underneath it, and two things put a ripple into a flat panel. The first is the backing: a board laminated on one face ends up with unequal tension between its faces and curls, which framers counter by mounting a sheet of similar weight to the back so both pull evenly. The second is adhesive, which shrinks as it cures and pulls on whatever it holds. An even bond line and even pressure prevent it. The relief works in your favor. Metal panel makers note that embossing makes surface waviness far less apparent, so a patterned tile is more forgiving than a plain sheet. For a single framed piece there is usually nothing to cut; when trimming is needed, a box cutter or scissors does it. Weigh the piece before you choose a hook We do not publish a weight for these tiles, and you shouldn't have to guess at one. Put the finished piece on a kitchen or bathroom scale, then round that number up by 25 to 50 percent to leave room for movement and stress. Then read the hardware ratings properly. The figures on drywall anchor packaging are typically ultimate loads, meaning the point of failure, and makers advise working to about a quarter of them. Sawtooth hangers suit light pieces, and hanger ratings are never cumulative, so two do not carry twice as much as one. Where the layout allows, drive into a stud. Where the light comes from Raking light arrives at an oblique angle, almost parallel to the surface, and emphasizes relief by throwing raised areas into contrast with recessed ones. It is how museums photograph brushwork. Light it straight on and everything flattens. Accent light is normally aimed at roughly 30 degrees from vertical so the reflection bounces out of your sightline, and for textured work the guidance is to subtract five and light at about 25. Go much shallower and the reflection swings back into view; past about 45 degrees the fixture itself starts to glare. As a general rule in accent lighting, a fixture within a foot of the wall grazes the surface and exaggerates texture, while one set back a couple of feet washes it flat. Hang the piece where a lamp, a sconce or a window throws light across its face rather than into it. A pack holds ten tiles, so a three-by-three grid uses nine and leaves a spare to test your mounting on. Grids change the problem, because the pattern repeats and the frames interrupt it. There are two coherent choices, and the failure is landing between them. Either register the repeat, with narrow profiles and tight gaps so the design reads as one field crossed by thin lines, or separate the tiles decisively so each reads as its own object. Lay a few out on the floor first. Where the pattern carries across the joins, as with a finish like Teal and Silver Leaves, the first approach rewards it. Where each tile reads as a complete object, as Patina Copper can, either approach works. Load does not carry over: every frame in a grid needs its own fixing. If your tile is a salvaged antique Start with the name, which is wrong. The National Park Service is blunt that "tin ceiling" is a misnomer, and that the sheet steel commonly used was neither tin-plated nor galvanized. It also records that nearly all pieces were factory primed with a base coat of white lead paint, and calls it a safe assumption that pressed metal carrying old paint has lead-based paint in it. That does not make a salvaged tile unframeable. The EPA's position is that lead-based paint is usually not a hazard if it is in good, intact condition and not on an impact or friction surface, and that lead dust can form when paint is scraped, sanded or heated, and also when painted surfaces bump or rub together. Framing a sound, intact tile and leaving it alone is the low-risk path, but that last mechanism matters: do not cut, trim, sand or press hard on a salvaged tile, and size the frame to the tile rather than the tile to the frame. Paint that is peeling, chipping, chalking or cracking is what the EPA calls a hazard needing immediate attention, whatever it does for the character of the piece. Do not sand it, put a heat gun near it, or try to strip it, and do not frame it until it has been dealt with properly. Two of the three lead test kits recognized by the EPA list ferrous metal, which covers the sheet steel these tiles were made from; the recognition does not extend to non-ferrous metals, and it is really about trusting a negative result rather than a general endorsement. A certified inspector or a lab analysis is the reliable answer. Handle a salvaged tile with gloves and eye protection, which is what the National Park Service advises for historic pressed metal: old cut edges are sharp, and the paint on them is likely lead-based. Work in a contained area rather than over a food surface, keep children and anyone pregnant out of the room, and wash your hands and forearms afterward. None of this applies to a new tile.
