Two products can both be sold as peel and stick wall panels and have almost nothing in common. A moulded foam sheet works out to under an ounce per square foot and trims with kitchen scissors. A screw-fixed PVC board runs eight tenths of a pound per square foot and goes up on screws driven every 16 to 24 inches, with no adhesive involved at all.
They carry the same three words on the listing, with six different materials underneath, each with its own rules about what cuts it, what holds it up, and where it belongs.
The six formats sold as peel and stick wall panels
Sorted by how much the material resists bending, because rigidity decides both how a panel is cut and what holds it to the wall. The figures below come from manufacturer spec sheets, install guides and our own published how-to pages.

Note what the two board formats have in common. Once a product is stiff and heavy enough to be called a board, the industry stops trusting glue on its own. The thin rigid plank is the exception, and it buys that with strict conditions on the wall behind it.
Rigidity is the fault line
A flexible sheet conforms to the wall it lands on. Minor waviness in old plaster disappears under it, and the adhesive stays in contact across the whole face. That is why a thin format can be sold with nothing but a peel-off liner on the back.
A rigid board does the opposite. It stays flat and forces the wall to meet it, so any hollow behind the board is a spot where nothing is bonded. This is why makers of rigid panelling talk constantly about substrate flatness, and why their answer to an uneven wall is a batten framework, not more glue.
Weight compounds it. A 2400 by 600 mm slat panel on an MDF core is listed at 12 kg, about 1.7 lb per square foot and a two-person lift. Thin foam sits at the other extreme: published panel weights work out to well under an ounce per square foot, which means the adhesive is barely fighting gravity; the limiting factor is how much of the panel actually touches the wall.
What it takes to cut each one
Scissors work on flexible vinyl and on moulded foam; foam manufacturers name scissors or a sharp utility knife in their own guides. Embossed aluminium belongs in the same group. Our metal tile pages put it plainly: peel, stick, and trim to fit using a box cutter or scissors. On a long straight run, scoring along a metal straightedge and snapping the tile is cleaner, and snips or heavy scissors handle curves and notches. The rigid formats are a different exercise. Thin PVC tile is cut with a fine-tooth blade of 60 teeth or higher, with a jigsaw for outlet openings; scoring and snapping is offered as a fallback that then needs sanding. Thicker PVC board is saw-only, and one manufacturer tells installers to cut it slowly in cold weather so the edge does not chip. MDF takes normal woodworking tools with cross-cutting tooth forms and carbide tips, and there is no knife method for it at all. Real wood planks still want a mitre saw for square cuts, even at an eighth of an inch thick.
When the adhesive is the whole fixing method
Four of the six are adhesive-only in practice. Two are not.
Printed vinyl and embossed aluminium tile are the straightforward pair: both arrive with the adhesive already on the back and need nothing else to hold them. Foam panel makers specify the pre-applied backing as the fixing method and none that we found calls for supplementary adhesive, fasteners or furring. Thin real-wood planks are also genuinely adhesive-only, but with conditions: one maker requires a smooth, dry, clean surface and states that popcorn, rough stucco and brick give the adhesive too little contact area.
The boards are a different matter. MDF panelling instructions call for brad or pin nails, and recommend fasteners and adhesive together, with furring strips every 24 inches. MDF-core slat panels are firmly in fastener territory, with published guidance ranging from nine screws per panel up to twenty, and screws mandatory on ceilings. Rigid PVC divides by format: the thin tile is set in site-applied construction adhesive, taped or shimmed for twenty minutes to several hours while it cures; the thicker board is screwed every 16 to 24 inches, the screws left deliberately loose so the PVC can expand and contract.
One rule survives across all six: the adhesive holds the panel, never the load. Anything heavy hung on a panelled wall still needs to reach the framing behind it.
How each material behaves around moisture
Standard MDF is the clearest case, and it is a warning. Its trade body states that standard MDF is not suitable for interior areas where wetting or high humidity is likely, and publishes 24-hour thickness swell of 20 to 30 percent for stock 5 mm and thinner. Those figures apply to the thin end of the range. Moisture-resistant MDF improves them but is still ruled out where wetting continues.
The foam itself handles moisture well; the marketing around it is less reliable. One supplier publishes a water absorption rate as low as 0.3 percent, yet the same category is widely marketed for bathrooms while individual manufacturers quietly exclude the wettest zones; one states outright that its panels should not be used in a shower. Wood panels come with narrow humidity envelopes, one brand asking for 30 to 65 percent relative humidity and a moisture reading under 8 percent before a plank goes up.

Which two of the six we make
WallWear sells two formats from that table. Rigid PVC, moulded foam, MDF and wood veneer are not in the catalogue.
The first is a flexible printed vinyl panel, 16 by 24 inches, in packs of eight, published at 1.66 lb per panel and described on the spec sheet as water-resistant vinyl. It is sheet goods with a pattern printed on the face. In practice the two terms are used interchangeably online, and both cover all six materials above. Traditional paneling described a fixed carpentry job in timber or MDF. Today the same search returns flexible adhesive-backed sheets alongside screw-fixed boards, which is exactly why comparing rigidity and fixing method matters more than comparing the words.
